Episode 17: The Howling III (1987)

Our third Australian movie is this baffling item. First it’s a horror comedy with a werewolf actress making fun of werewolf movies. Then it becomes straight horror as she gives birth to a creature and her town is destroyed. Then it becomes touching family drama as they all live happily in the beautiful outback. The US President, the Pope, and anthropologist Frank Sinatra eventually decide werewolves are nice. The end.

Episode 14: Frenchman’s Farm (1987)

This Australian ghost mystery peaks in the first 10 minutes, which feature both violence and time travel, neither of which is found in the rest of the film. You’ll be inspired as MikeD, MikeR and Lindsay overcome their apathy and talk about stuff! You’ll marvel at Darrill’s good fortune in not being present this week!

Episode 4: The Quest (1986)

In this wholesome adventure, Henry Thomas uses his ET-honed bike skills to debunk the non-magical pseudo-mysteries of Aboriginal Australian mythology. Lindsay, MikeD and MikeR discuss how all joy and wonder will be sapped from the souls of kids who view this film, and how the real hero is the sassy, mom-tormenting kid sister Jane.

Not to be confused with the JCVD vehicle of the same name, The Quest (1986) was released internationally under a plethora of other, less generic titles (The Spirit Chaser, Frog Dreaming, The Secret of the Lake). Despite marginal success in its home country, it was one of the first films that a young Miramax acquired and blandified for American video distribution. Enjoy!
